Elegy for an Easter Lily
I gave you a name I knew you’d never answer to,
Set you in the sun, settled you into our home.
My promises soaked through like morning light—
But you didn’t speak, or take up much space.
So, your damp soil turned to dust,
And your leaves drooped, no longer supple.
Still, I didn’t notice –
until you leaned, brittle and brown,
toward the light that could never have saved you.
